How to pack children’s toys when you are moving house

When you are moving house be aware that children will often hold on to their things a little tighter than they usually would. Moving is all about change and the more their lives are changing the tighter they’ll hold on to the things they can. Children often feel they are loosing so many things they love when they move – school, friends, teachers, playgrounds, a home they love. Which is why they’ll want to keep that old doll or ragged jumper- things that make them feel secure. The decision to move is, after all, taken by the adults and the child feels powerless because it can not, and should not, influence that decision. Of course a move planned and managed well, distress is not always the out come.

Helping your child pack is a good time to discuss the move and their feelings about leaving friends, school etc. This will offer them comfort and should               ease the moving and transition process.

The most important thing throughout the moving process is reassurance. Throughout the whole process there will be lots of questions and worries that your child will want to talk about. Be prepared to listern and reassure them that change is a part of life and can be a good thing. Discuss with them plans to make new friends, explore the new area and have fun days out.
