Will My Sofa Fit Through the Door?

Here’s How to Find Out

Moving a sofa into your home can be a challenge, often involving wiggling, pushing, and sometimes removing doors. Determining if your sofa will fit through a doorway, up a staircase, or into an elevator takes some careful planning.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you maneuver your sofa and ensure a successful move.

Step 1: Measure Your Sofa

Start by measuring three key dimensions of your sofa:

  1. Height: From the floor to the top of the sofa’s back (while upright).
  2. Width: The distance between the two widest points, usually the armrests.
  3. Length: From one end of the sofa to the other.

If the legs can be removed, take them off to reduce the height. If not, measure with the legs attached.

Step 2: Measure the Opening

Measure the width and height of the doorway, stairwell, or elevator door you’re working with. Ensure you also assess the surrounding space, like hallways or foyers, to confirm you have room to maneuver.

Step 3: Determine the Fit

  • Back Height vs. Door Width: If the sofa’s back height is taller than the door’s width, check if the sofa’s width is narrower than the door’s width.
  • Example: If the door is 40″ wide, the sofa’s width is 43″, and the back height is 38″, you can rotate the sofa so the back faces the ceiling and slide it through.
  • Sofa Length vs. Door Height: If both the width and back height don’t work, measure the sofa’s length. The sofa’s length must be shorter than the door’s height.

Ensure there’s at least one foot of space on either side of the doorway or hallway to maneuver the sofa. If space is tight, removing the door might help.

Step 4: Maneuver the Sofa

  1. Stand the Sofa Upright: Position the sofa on one end, with the bottom (where the feet are) entering the doorway first.
  2. Angle into a “V” Shape: Tilt the sofa so the back and bottom form a “V” shape. The seat should face inside the room.
  3. Curl Around the Doorway: With one person outside and another inside, guide the sofa through by angling it and letting it “curl” around the frame.

When All Else Fails

If these methods don’t work, consider hiring a professional. Some companies specialise in dismantling sofas, moving them, and reassembling them inside your home, including reupholstery. While this can be costly, it’s worth it for a cherished piece.
